Union Hall

Union Hall is a non-profit arts space located in Denver, Colorado. Since opening its doors, Union Hall has built a community of ambitious new creative minds that are bringing experimental and thought-provoking work to the city’s cultural landscape, through visual art exhibitions, accessible cultural programming, and educational pathways for emerging creatives.

Our mission is to advance opportunities for diverse, emerging artists and creatives, providing a platform for Denver locals and visitors to engage in enriching exhibitions and creative experiences, and serving as a community-focused arts space.

Union Hall hosts 7 exhibitions and over 50 events each year. In addition, Union Hall supports professional development for emerging curators through our Rough Gems Curatorial Program.

The primary responsibilities of the Executive Director are the management of Union Hall in conjunction with the Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee. The Executive Director undertakes long- and short-range strategic and operational planning, fundraising and development of Union Hall programs. The Executive Director is Union Hall’s leader on all artistic, education and organizational vision representing Union Hall as chief spokesperson to its internal and external constituencies. The Executive Director participates in events, which increase awareness, and expands community outreach locally and in the State of Colorado. Protector and driver of Union Hall’s mission.

Responsibilities

Strategic and Operational Planning:

  • In partnership with the Board and the Executive Committee, the ED develops Union Hall’s strategic plan and goals. The ED is responsible for the strategic alignment, implementation and management of this plan.

  • Works in conjunction with the Board to develop the strategic direction

and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of Union Hall to increase local, statewide, national and international awareness and prominence.

  • Directs Union Hall’s operations, including development, education and public programming, finance, external communications, and staffing.

Fundraising:

  • Leads and participates in all fundraising and development activities, including grant writing and developing relationships with foundations, government, corporations, and individual donors.

  • The ED is ultimately responsible with securing financial and human resources to implement Union Hall’s mission.

  • In partnership with the Board and the Development Committee, the ED

oversees a comprehensive fundraising plan that supports Union Hall’s ongoing expenses and the growth of its capacity and impact.

  • The ED serves as spokesperson for Union Hall establishing strong partnerships in the community and enhancing the public image to expand interest and support.

Artistic Leadership & Program Development:

  • The ED provides oversight for all programming at Union Hall, working closely with the Chief Curator to create a cohesive exhibition plan and continue to develop the Rough Gems Curatorial program, along with other programs and events.

  • The ED will also position Union Hall as a thought leader in art and culture in Denver and the State of Colorado assuring that Union Hall has maximum visibility and artistic standing with an impact that reaches deeply into the

local community.

Requirements

Fundraising and Financial Management:

  • The ED assures that Union Hall’s financial resources are sourced and used appropriately and effectively.

  • The ED assumes fiscal responsibility for the overall budget and monitors the financial situation of Union Hall and its programs.

  • The ED assures appropriate and necessary cash flow and the most effective use of fiscal resources.

  • The ED oversees the development of necessary monitoring to assure that all funds are properly used and accounted for and that reports to funding agencies are prompt and correct.

Board Relations:

  • The ED supports the Board and its committees as Union Hall’s strategic governing body and works with the Board President to support its operational work. The ED supports the Board’s development through new board member onboarding, board training and performance self-evaluation. - The ED is responsible for arranging timely and accurate financial reports to the Board. The ED participates in the annual Board Retreat in which presents the annual projected budget for approval.

Public Relations:

  • The ED identifies key stakeholders (individuals, agencies, organizations, and institutions); promotes Union Hall; develops strategies to deliver those messages to stakeholders; and leads Union Hall’s public relations to plan to maximize the visibility and brand image of Union Hall.

  • The ED is expected to establish and maintain a high level of interaction and relationships with external constituents including other major institutions in the Denver Metro Area.

  • The ED directs the Marketing Manager on the overall development of public relations and marketing initiatives.

  • The ED also develops an effective communications plan to raise Union Hall’s profile.

Qualifications

  • Experience in development and fundraising, including foundation and government grants as well as corporate and private donations.

  • Strong record of success in fundraising and audience development.

  • Five years of experience in a nonprofit organization.

  • At least 2 years at a senior managerial level preferred.

  • Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction.

  • Experience developing and implementing strategic plans.

  • Strong business management skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for galleries, non-profits, or similar organizations, as well as a history of involvement in relevant professional organizations.

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking.

  • Proven ability to work cooperatively, diplomatically, and effectively with Boards, volunteers, and in community relations and outreach capacities.

  • Competence in managing gallery operations, including personnel matters.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise as well as to work successfully with gallery staff, contractors, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies.

  • Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget.

  • Financial record-keeping expertise.

  • Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills.

  • Ensures the operations and administration are in compliance with City policies, City ordinances, and local, State and Federal regulations.

  • Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings when needed.
