A bespoke auction house in Chicago is looking for a generalist Auction Cataloger to join their team. The successful candidate will be responsible for organizing, evaluating and writing catalog descriptions for categories such as magic, fine and outsider art, and fine books and manuscripts. They will research inventory using all available research methods, with the goal of developing a comprehensive understanding of the items being sold. The Cataloger will also work with consignors and customers throughout the auction process, engaging with clients to develop business and valuate potential consignments, as well as respond to client inquiries and client service needs relating to the auctions. A person with prior auction experience preferred, but someone with specialized subject matter expertise, or who has had success preparing a high volume of collectibles or estates for sale through other channels would also be considered.
Cataloging property with a high degree of accuracy, while maintaining company style
Meeting Cataloging Department deadlines along auction schedule
Research the authenticity and value of property for auction
Keeping inventory safe and organized using best archival methods, and working with Photography and Property Management teams, as needed
Support auction operations before, during, and after live sales by responding to client inquiries, executing phone and online bids, and attending to client service needs, as required
Some travel and appraisal of potential consignments
Availability to work Saturday auctions, as assigned
Additional duties may be assigned, as needed
Minimum of two years previous experience in a cataloging role for a commercial business like an auction house, or high-volume dealership
Experience cataloging a wide range of fine art and collectible objects
Ability to quickly and accurately identify, valuate and research offered and consigned items
